In Naoussa, one of the most beautiful regions of Macedonia in the eastern slopes of Vermio, you will discover one of the most historic wineries of Greece, the Boutari winery. It was in Naoussa, where, in 1879, the history of Boutari began. Since then, it has played a leading role in the development and evolution of Greek wine both within but also outside the Greek borders.
Naoussa Grande Reserve
Grande Reserve Naoussa is the trademark of Boutari Wineries, since it is one of its first and best-known wines. A genuine example of a red aged wine that first introduced to the market the concept of a limited, controlled production made from grapes from selected vineyards.
VINIFICATION: Classic red vinification with a high level of compound extraction, essential for an aged wine.
LENGTH AND TYPE OF AGEING:
4 years (from which 2 years in oak barrels+2 years in bottle)
AEGING POTENTIAL: 12-15 years
CHARACTERISTICS: A rich wine with a deep red colour and terracotta tints. The sweet aromas of dried fruit, dominated by tomato and fig, blend with the aromas of ageing, like cinnamon, vanilla, wood and spices. A potent wine, with a body characterized by an abundance of mature tannins, a result of the long ageing process. Lasting aftertaste.
Xinomavro (also often spelled Xynomavro) is a red-wine grape originating in Greece, more particularly in northwestern Greece, in the Imathia region of Macedonia, in what are now the monovarietal appellations of Naoussa and Amynteo; Naoussa is often regarded the best source. Xinomavro is generally considered one of the dozen and a half or so of world-class red-wine grapes (those in boldface in the varietals list to the left of the page). Xinomavro is not a wine of our times (in any sense). It is a tricky devil in the vineyard: if the vineyardist lets it go, hoping to obtain quantity, quality takes a nosedive, and thin, acidic plonk results; but neither can it be made into the sort of huge Parkerized, internationalized, Shiraz-like red that is so popular today. It can only, made with care and skill, be itself, a red more like Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo in that it trades on delicacy and requires some nontrivial bottle age to get to where it should be.
